Blood Tests

A complete blood count test, or CBC test, is a blood lab test that evaluates the number of blood cells within the body. This includes white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. Having this information is critical in assessing pet health and can help detect infections and other immune system disorders.

Chemistry panel tests measure various substances within the blood, including glucose, electrolytes, and enzymes. With an accurate blood chemistry profile for your pet, our veterinary team can better assess the health and function of vital organs such as the kidneys and liver. An annual chemistry panel test is recommended to stay on top of your pet’s overall health trends.

Additionally, we offer specialized blood tests such as ACTH stimulation tests, proBNP blood tests, and thyroid testing that are essential for monitoring the overall health and wellbeing of your pet. ACTH stimulation is aimed at diagnosing Cushing’s Disease and Addison’s Disease, while proBNP tests (B-type Natriuretic Peptide) are used to determine heart health. Our multitude of bloodwork services provide pet owners with access to high-quality and reliable vet lab services in Boulder, CO.

Urinalysis

Like blood, an animal’s urine can provide valuable insight into its health. A urinalysis is used to detect kidney disease, urinary tract infections (UTI), and other potential health complications. Dog urinalysis and cat urinalysis are two of the most common lab services we offer at Indian Peaks Veterinary Clinic in Boulder. If your furry friend is having issues urinating or you are detecting an unusual odor, blood, or any other abnormality, contact our office to schedule a visit.

Fecal Exams

Fecal exams are another effective method of monitoring the health of animals. The content of a pet’s feces provides a means for diagnosing parasites and other digestive issues. While many complications, such as worms, can be diagnosed visually, a complete lab analysis is needed to maximize the accuracy of these tests for dogs, cats, and other animals. We recommend a fecal exam as part of your pet’s annual physical visit to stay ahead of parasites, infections, and other GI issues.

Specialized Veterinary Diagnostic Services in Boulder

Beyond blood lab tests and other common procedures, Indian Peaks Veterinary Clinic provides Boulder pet owners with access to specialised veterinary services. Some of these services include cytology, parvo titer, distemper titer, and other titer tests. Each lab testing service is completed with care and precision to uphold the highest quality control standards.

Cytology

Cytology for cats and dogs is a useful test for diagnosing infections, cancer, and more. Tissue samples are taken and placed under a microscope in order to examine cells, allowing for rapid results and minimal discomfort to your pet. Skin lesions and other abnormalities can often be diagnosed through cytologies. Our team at Indian Peaks Veterinary Clinic is here to help you decide if a cytology is needed and walk you through the results and treatment processes.

Titer Testing

Titer testing is a specialized lab service provided at our clinic in Boulder, CO. A blood sample is taken and tested to determine antibody count for a specific disease. These diseases include canine distemper, parvo, and rabies. Titer tests such as parvo titers and rabies titers can be an effective way of determining your pet’s immunities and need for specific vaccinations.

Allergy Testing

Your dog or cat’s tolerance to specific allergens can be determined through specialized allergy tests. Serum allergy tests require a simple blood draw and can measure reactivity to pollen, mold, dust mites, and other common allergens. Our advanced pet allergy testing services provide pet owners valuable information necessary for properly managing allergies in their cat or dog.

Preparing For Your Pet’s Test: Boulder Vet Lab Testing Services Made Easy

While blood tests must be completed in our office, pet owners can often collect other samples at home. For a urine sample, walk your dog or cat on a leash to its favorite potty location, and simply place a bowl, cup, or tray underneath your pet mid-stream. Use a partner if possible for added support, and be sure to wear latex or nitrile gloves to collect. Transfer urine into a sealed container with your pet’s name, and bring it to our facility as soon as possible. If you are unable to bring it to us within 1-2 hours, we recommend storing it in the refrigerator until you can bring it.

The procedure is similar for a feces sample. Note that only two tablespoons of urine and an ounce or two of feces is all this required to lab testing services. If you have any questions about collecting samples or where to get blood work done, we invite you to contact our Boulder office.

For certain tests for dogs and cats, fasting may be required. Be sure to follow any specific instructions you receive in order to ensure the most accurate test results.

Boulder Vet Lab Testing FAQs

  • Bloodwork for dogs and cats can be an effective way of detecting a number of diseases, deficiencies, and early onset symptoms of illness. Kidney disease, liver disease, and autoimmune disorders can all be diagnosed with the help of blood tests. Bloodwork for dogs can also be used to test for Cushing's disease, parvo, and other diseases.
  • When completed by certified professionals, veterinary lab testing results are extremely accurate. At Indian Peaks Veterinary Clinic, we partner with the top lab service providers who emphasize quality control and accuracy.
  • Thyroid testing for dogs tests the function of the thyroid gland and its ability to regulate metabolism. It is a common test done by veterinarians to diagnose hypothyroidism, a condition associated with a hormone loss that can lead to weight gain, skin problems, and more. Early detection is critical for managing care for your dog.
  • If a thyroid test for cats determines advanced thyroid failure, a thyroidectomy may be necessary to remove one or both of the thyroid glands. This surgical procedure is used to regulate an overactive thyroid and provide an effective cure for cats. Cat blood tests and other vet lab services can be used to diagnose thyroid disease.
  • Titer tests are a specific form of bloodwork for dogs and cats used to measure an animal’s antibodies and relative immunity to a specific disease. These allow pet owners to determine the need for certain vaccinations. A titer test for parvo, distemper, and more is especially recommended for new pets with unknown backgrounds.
